Environmental Policy

Southwold Golf Club is a traditional members’ golf club, with a 9 hole golf course, clubhouse and Pro shop. We have been on our current site for around 130 years. We are a registered amateur sports association, run by a committee.

Our policy is to conduct our business responsibly and with respect for the interests of all those affected by our operations. We believe that our activities should respect the environment and positively influence the community in which we operate.

In 2015/2016 our carbon footprint from our on-site activities (electricity and LPG consumption) has been calculated to be 95.6 tCO2e.

In order to reduce our environmental impact we aim to:

  • Use energy, water and other natural resources efficiently;

  • Minimise waste and recycle wherever possible;

  • Enhance the natural environment of the golf course for the benefit of both golfers and wildlife;

  • Build long term relationships with local business partners and suppliers, favouring local business partners whose standards and ethical practices are compatible with our own; and

  • Ensure we meet all our environmental legislative obligations.

We currently undertake the following actions in order to manage and minimise our environmental impact:

  • Solar PV panels are installed on the roof of the clubhouse (4kW);

  • Low energy lighting as installed in the clubhouse and Pro shop;

  • External lights are on PIR and daylight sensors;

  • Additional insulation was installed in the roof of the clubhouse in 2013/2014 to increase energy efficiency and reduce heat loss;

  • All the windows in the clubhouse have been replaced with double-glazed UPVC units to increase energy efficiency and reduce heat loss.

Our objectives (reviewed annually) are to:

  • Continue to measure and monitor energy consumption at Southwold Golf Club, with the aim of further reducing our emissions associated with LPG use;

  • Publish our environmental policy on our website;

  • Improve environmental awareness amongst staff and members using the golf club;

  • Gain the Carbon Charter certification.
